What the sizes actually look like.
Storage sizes are quoted in feet, which tells you almost nothing until you can see one. Below, every size we rent a page for is drawn to the same scale, with a car beside them for comparison, and then set out with what each one holds.
All of them, side by side.
Drawn to scale from the real dimensions. A car is about 6 by 15 feet.
Dimensions, area, and what that holds.
Volume assumes an eight-foot ceiling. In practice you will stack about six feet and want an aisle down the middle, which is what our size tool allows for.
| Size | Area | Volume | What it holds | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5×5 | 25 sq ft | 200 cu ft | A walk-in closet | 5×5 in detail |
| 5×10 | 50 sq ft | 400 cu ft | A studio's worth | 5×10 in detail |
| 5×15 | 75 sq ft | 600 cu ft | A long, narrow room | 5×15 in detail |
| 10×10 | 100 sq ft | 800 cu ft | Half a garage | 10×10 in detail |
| 10×15 | 150 sq ft | 1,200 cu ft | A large single garage | 10×15 in detail |
| 10×20 | 200 sq ft | 1,600 cu ft | A one-car garage | 10×20 in detail |
| 10×25 | 250 sq ft | 2,000 cu ft | A long one-car garage | 10×25 in detail |
We rent more sizes than these, including a few odd ones like 7.5×10 and 14.5×18 that nobody searches for by name. The full list, with today's prices, has all of them.
Three ways, in order of effort.
Guess from the table
Fine for boxes and a bike. Most people who guess go one size too big, which is the expensive mistake rather than the safe one.
List what you have
Our size tool adds it up, checks the biggest item will physically fit on the floor, and names the smallest unit we rent that takes it.
Work it outDescribe it to a person
Ring the office. Toni or Donna, who walk these buildings every day, will size it with you in about a minute. Nobody here works on commission.
Storing a car, a boat or a camper? Those are sized differently and priced separately on the vehicle pages.
Still between two sizes?
Take the smaller one. You can move up later if you get it wrong, or ring and let a person settle it in a minute. Reserving costs nothing either way.
Questions about sizes
- What size do I need?
- As a rough guide: a 5x5 takes a walk-in closet, a 5x10 a studio, a 10x10 about a one-bedroom apartment, and a 10x20 a three-bedroom house. That is standard guidance rather than a measurement of your things, so tell us what you are storing and someone here will size it with you. Nobody in this office works on commission, so there is nothing in it for us to sell you space you do not need.
- What is the difference between climate-controlled and drive-up?
- A climate-controlled unit is inside a heated and cooled building, so the temperature and the humidity stay in a band all year. That matters for wood, leather, electronics, photographs, instruments and anything staying more than a season. A drive-up unit lets you back a vehicle to the door, which is easier for loading and cheaper, and is fine for tools, bikes, building materials and short stays in mild weather. Ask the office which buildings have which, because it varies.
- Do you have climate-controlled storage in East Hampton?
- Yes. The 265 West High Street site is climate-controlled, across two buildings, and it is where most of our unit sizes are.
