Back the van to your own door.
No corridor, no lift, no carrying the sofa twice. You park on the apron in front of your unit, roll the door up, and load straight out of the vehicle. For a move, or for anything heavy you get into regularly, it is the difference between an afternoon and a weekend.

Take one of these
- A move, where everything is heavy and you handle it twice
- Business stock and equipment you get into weekly
- Garden tools, mowers, bikes, building materials
- Anything you would rather not walk down a corridor
Do not take one of these
A drive-up unit is its own outside wall, so it tracks the weather. Furniture, leather, electronics, photographs and anything staying past one season want the conditioned building instead.
We would rather say that now than take the cheaper booking and meet your mattress in the spring.
Global Self Storage - Portland
529 Glastonbury Turnpike, Portland, CT 06480. On Route 17 in Portland, between Glastonbury and the Connecticut River. The drive-up rows and an interior building are both on this site, so if you are not sure which suits what you are storing, the office will tell you in a minute on the phone.
Our conditioned site is 265 West High Street in East Hampton, about fifteen minutes away, and that is where anything delicate should go.
Questions about drive-up units
- What size do I need?
- As a rough guide: a 5x5 takes a walk-in closet, a 5x10 a studio, a 10x10 about a one-bedroom apartment, and a 10x20 a three-bedroom house. That is standard guidance rather than a measurement of your things, so tell us what you are storing and someone here will size it with you. Nobody in this office works on commission, so there is nothing in it for us to sell you space you do not need.
- What is the difference between climate-controlled and drive-up?
- A climate-controlled unit is inside a heated and cooled building, so the temperature and the humidity stay in a band all year. That matters for wood, leather, electronics, photographs, instruments and anything staying more than a season. A drive-up unit lets you back a vehicle to the door, which is easier for loading and cheaper, and is fine for tools, bikes, building materials and short stays in mild weather. Ask the office which buildings have which, because it varies.
- Do you have climate-controlled storage in East Hampton?
- Yes. The 265 West High Street site is climate-controlled, across two buildings, and it is where most of our unit sizes are.
There is something free at this building today.
Reserving costs nothing and holds it. This button books at Portland, not at another building.
