Inside a building, down a corridor, behind your own lock.
An indoor unit has a door that opens onto a corridor rather than onto the weather. Nothing blows under it, nothing beats down on it, and the walk in is lit and level. You pay a little more and you carry things a little further. There is a cart for the second part; nobody has invented one for the first.

This is what indoor means.
Numbered doors on a sealed floor, lit end to end, with the ductwork running over the corridor. No gravel, no puddle at the threshold, no weeds growing into the bottom of your door.
529 Glastonbury Turnpike, Portland. Our East Hampton buildings are the same idea, conditioned, and we are short of photographs of them until we get a camera in there.
The trade is convenience against weather.
That is the whole decision, and it is worth two minutes because it is the one people regret. Almost nobody regrets paying for indoor. Plenty of people regret a drive-up unit that was meant to be for six weeks.
| Indoor | Drive-up | |
|---|---|---|
| Weather | Off it entirely. No wind, rain, snow or sun. | The unit is the outside wall. |
| Loading | Park, then a corridor and a cart. | Back the van to your own door. |
| Heavy items | Harder. You carry it twice. | Easier. This is what it is for. |
| Dust and grit | Much less of it. | Whatever blows under the door. |
| Price | More. | Less. |
| Best for | Furniture, anything staying a while, anything you care about. | Moves, tools, stock, anything you get into weekly. |
Indoors and conditioned are not the same word.
Every conditioned unit is indoors. Not every indoor unit is heated and cooled. A unit can be inside a building and still track the weather, which is fine for a bicycle and not fine for a leather sofa.
Our East Hampton site is the conditioned one: it has CLIMATE CONTROLLED on the front of the building. If you are storing something delicate and you are closer to Portland, ring the office and ask which building to use rather than guessing from a web page.

Questions about unit types
- What size do I need?
- As a rough guide: a 5x5 takes a walk-in closet, a 5x10 a studio, a 10x10 about a one-bedroom apartment, and a 10x20 a three-bedroom house. That is standard guidance rather than a measurement of your things, so tell us what you are storing and someone here will size it with you. Nobody in this office works on commission, so there is nothing in it for us to sell you space you do not need.
- What is the difference between climate-controlled and drive-up?
- A climate-controlled unit is inside a heated and cooled building, so the temperature and the humidity stay in a band all year. That matters for wood, leather, electronics, photographs, instruments and anything staying more than a season. A drive-up unit lets you back a vehicle to the door, which is easier for loading and cheaper, and is fine for tools, bikes, building materials and short stays in mild weather. Ask the office which buildings have which, because it varies.
- Do you have climate-controlled storage in East Hampton?
- Yes. The 265 West High Street site is climate-controlled, across two buildings, and it is where most of our unit sizes are.
27 sizes free across the buildings.
Prices come off our reservation system every hour. No deposit to hold one, and you can change size later if you get it wrong.
